Ganguro Girls, published by Konemann, 2001, documents the ganguro (black-face) cultural phenomenon among Japanese youth. The book features an essay by writer Kate Klippenstein and over seventy full-length portraits by Everett Kennedy Brown. Shot in a makeshift studio in Tokyo's fashionable Shibuya district the photographs reveal the sense of playfulness of the ganguro girls and their eclectic fashion sense that continues to attract worldwide attention among fashion creators.


Oretachi no Nippon (in Japanese), Shogakukan Publishers, 1999, is an acclaimed book of essays and photographs by Everett Kennedy Brown documenting the lives of nine top foreign athletes in Japan. The essays and photographs provide an insightful look into the lives of foreign professional athletes in Japan and reveal the athletes candid views on the country and its sports culture.

Iketeirudakede Injanai (in Japanese), Kindai Eiga Sha Publishers, 2004, is the first book by the husband and wife team of Everett Kennedy Brown and Deco Nakajima. Photos of life at Brown's Field farm by the photographer accompany 39 essays by the well-known Macrobiotic cooking teacher on such topics as love, marriage, childrearing, community, travel and natural living.

Everett Kennedy Brown is a photojournalist and writer based in Tokyo, Japan. His work appears regularly in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Times, The Financial Times, The International Herald Tribune and other major media. At present, he is the Regional Chief Photographer for European Pressphoto Agency (epa).


His awards include Picture of the Year from Geo Magazine, Germany and from MILK: A Celebration of Humanity. His photographs are exhibited regularly in galleries and museums worldwide. His books include Ganguro Girls (Konneman), Ore-tachi no Nippon (Shogakukan) and Ikete-iru Iin-jyan-nai (Kindaieiga-sha).


Everett Kennedy Brown lives with his wife and essayist, Deco Nakajima, and their five children in an old Japanese farmhouse where he grows heirloom rice varieties as part of his on-going study of Japan’s fundamental culture.
